Scalp dermatitis. Skin dermatitis

Scalp dermatitis. Skin dermatitis. Dermatitis is a skin disease. It is manifested itself as eczematous lesions due to an alteration of the skin barrier characterized by redness, dry skin and intense itching. According to the duration, there are two types of reactions in our body. We are talking about repeated reactions or severe dermatitis with a short duration, and chronic dermatitis with a long duration alternating periods of improvements and more or less serious exacerbations.

Dermatitis

The dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects around 5-20% of children and 1-3% of adults. It is manifested itself as eczematous lesions due to an alteration of skin barrier characterized by redness, dryness and itching of the skin. These symptoms can affect the whole body or specific areas like hands, neck, abdomen or inner part of extremities. It is not a life-threatening condition, neither common nor contagious, however, it can negatively affect the patient’s everyday life feeling uncomfortable and embarrassed.

The genetic factor

How much a person is genetically predisposed to getting the disease?

The genetic factor plays an essential role in the development of the disease.

The following images show how the future child can suffer from dermatitis if one of the parents or both have the disease.

These three examples display the likelihood of developing dermatitis:

The last image C shows that both parents suffer from dermatitis. In this case, the future child has 80% chance of developing the disease. Despite the fact that the percentage is significantly high, other factors can trigger the development of the disease and the way the skin is affected.  However, we cannot forget about skin reactions to external agents in the process of dermatitis development.

Causes

What are the causes of dermatitis?

Most common and known causes:

• Exposure to allergens, or other substances that cause allergy symptoms- (food, mites, pollen, nickel, etc.) (read the blog for further dieting information)

• Exposure to irritant agents, that is, substances that cause skin inflammation. There are two groups: primary skin irritants produce direct inflammation on those areas of the skin they contact with and secondary skin irritants that, unlike the first group, produce similar effects but after a period of exposure to a substance;

• Excessive cleaning - can alter the natural PH in the dermis causing too much dryness, poor elasticity and red spots with itching sensation.

Knowing the causes is not enough for preventing the development of the disease; the symptoms analysis will provide us with useful information to identify the type of dermatitis and to avoid what is harmful to the individual.

Read more on symptoms, reactions and types of dermatitis in the next article.

A self-diagnosis based on symptoms and blemishes is not always easy because sometimes considerable overlapping and similar features are observed among skin lesions. Although each skin condition has different causes and developments, it is essential to be aware of what is happening in our body to treat and fight what is affecting us.

Reaction, symptoms and type of dermatitis

According to the duration, there are two types of reactions in our body. We are talking about repeated reactions or severe dermatitis with a short duration, and chronic dermatitis with a long duration alternating periods of improvements and more or less serious exacerbations.

As it is mentioned before, there are many types of dermatitis. We focus, to be precise, in some forms of dermatitis that have few but distinctive features allowing the disease to be identified.

Atopic dermatitis: Commonly known as eczema, it appears as tiny vesicles in those areas of skin having direct contact with sensitising substances. It can affect, depending on the age, the whole body or just the neck and abdominal areas; however, it generally develops in lower and upper extremities including the palm of the hand.

Seborrheic dermatitis: it is identified by the psoriasis plaque formation in the scalp. This dermatitis also affects either sides of the nose, behind de ear and armpits.

Perioral dermatitis. A triangle-shaped facial rash that begins at the base of the nose and ends in the chin including the area around the mouth. It can produce itching and burning.

Dermatitis herpetiformis: characterized by redness and itching blisters filled with a watery fluid that has sometimes 10 mm in diameter or more. Generally, it develops after an excessive exposure to heat, cold and chemical agents or due to prolonged friction.

We have already defined the different types of dermatitis. Now, we will show that the disease can vary according to age group:

Childhood – the main acute lesions are erythema, edema, blisters, erosions and scabs.

Middle childhood - the main subacute lesions are scabs and lichenification.

Main body areas: flexural surfaces of the extremities, wrists, back of the hands, eyelids.

Childhood, adolescence and adulthood- The main chronic lesions are hypercheratinosis, lichenification, and cracks in the skin of the hands.

Main affected areas: neck, flexural surfaces of the extremities, palmoplantar, and peripheral and perioral area.
