Scalp Psoriasis

Scalp psoriasis is an inflammatory disease that causes plaque lesions, with redness, mild occasional itching, and dandruff-like scaling. This disorder has a chronic-recurrent nature, subject to periods of remission that alternate with recurrence and/or worsening of symptoms.

The disease can occur at any age and has the same incidence in men as in women. The plaques or scales covered with dandruff which characterize it can vary greatly both by thickness and by extension and detach quite easily.

The erythematous patches are covered with silver-white scales, normally positioned in the frontal/temporal region and in the nape of the neck. The skin beneath it, due to irritation, is bright red. The patches are often crowned by a much clearer halo of skin, so they are very evident. In some cases, the patches are so widespread that they form a kind of cap that covers the entire scalp.

The scalp is the area of the body most commonly involved and may be the form of presentation of the disease. Rarely, it is involved more than 2 cm from the hairline.

Scalp psoriasis doesn’t cause hair loss. In fact, the hair bulb is located in the depth of the dermis, that’s why psoriasis is not involved in the hair loss process given that this disease only occurs in the superficial layer.

In its milder forms it tends to be confused with seborrheic dermatitis because of some common symptoms such as skin irritation and shedding flakes of dandruff. Like all other forms of psoriasis, the latter also worsens during the winter due to the cold that attacks the skin, whereas in summer it tends to decrease thanks to the benefits of sun exposure.

From the anatomical point of view, the scalp is a highly irrigated body area and therefore more permeable to topical treatments.

For the management of patients with this special form of psoriasis is  among which are the topical treatment with corticosteroids that are available in a variety of vehicles such as ointments, creams, emulsions, foam, lotions, gel, and shampoo, alone or associated with other medications such as salicylic acid, urea, coal tar and vitamin D analogues is recommended.

Systemic treatments are recommended in the resistant forms of the disease that do not respond to topical therapy and include methotrexate, cyclosporine, retinoids and, in highly refractory cases, biological therapy.

The treatment with Psotherapy Shampoo and Psotherapy Scalp Fluid is recommended for scalp psoriasis, which is a natural and cortisone-free product with magnificent results after two weeks of treatment, with a significant reduction of the erythema and the annoying peeling that afflicts patients, besides it can be used at any age in both children and adults without any adverse reaction so far, being very accepted by patients from the cosmetic point of view.
